Having a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion and an MBA in Fashion Tech has been my dream for the most part of my post-NYSC (after my first degree) and I’ve had to teach myself a lot of what I know and do in fashion in order to apply for a scholarship and work while studying.

I had thought it would be a straightforward journey but alas! Life happened! I made my mistakes and then COVID-19 even made it worse.

Getting into my desired school was not the problem, but figuring out how to pay the tuition(even though I was working towards a partial scholarship). Covid-19 crisis not only disrupted academic structures but also hindered chances of getting a fashion job as a student (fashion internships and fashion-week related jobs ).

So taking a bold step to apply and being stuck in another country was not an option for me.

So what did I do?

  • Did thorough research on the school’s MBA Fashion Tech syllabus.
  • Studied some amazing research articles on data analytics, blockchain, neural networks, and how they were applied in the fashion industry.
  • Stumbled on a particular article (about 60 pages) on the application of Data Analytics in the Fashion Industry.
  • I made a decision to explore Data Analytics.
  • I searched YouTube Videos, Coursera, Udemy, and EDX on data analytics courses.
  • Read a lot of articles on Medium, KDnuggets, and some other public blogs.
  • Researched Data Schools in Nigeria and went with UTIVA Data School.
  • Though I applied in November 2020, I didn’t understand the value of the new career path so I took a break until April 2021.
  • Took a long break off social media to study more and then advanced into Machine Learning.
  • Had a few people I could reach out to when I got stuck.

I had to do a lot of studying and even then, it did not seem like I was getting close, then I stumbled on Natassha Selvaraj’s article (https://lnkd.in/dady9mYP) on how she self-thought herself and landed a data analytics internship in less than a year.

Trust me, I became more motivated!

Amidst all of these, I had other projects I was working on, including Project UNLEASH, which has played a great impact on my career path.

Inasmuch as I am still at the early phase of Data Analytics and Machine Learning, I am happy to share my journey, projects, and tutorials with you.

I also discovered not many fashion professionals, students, and enthusiasts are aware of the impact of Advanced Analytics and Data Science in the fashion Industry.

Hence the reason I have launched my blog on Medium and my personal website will be launched in September.

It would mean a lot to me if you could take out some time to read my articles on Medium.

FINALLY,

Perhaps you are like me, you have planned and structured the path you need to take, but life happened or you made some mistakes.

Maybe you overthink and plan, without taking any steps because you want it to be perfect from the beginning.

Please don’t give up!

Take a break!

Reach out to the right people, think out of the box, stay open, and don’t be afraid to take the first step. Even the greatest person today was once a beginner.
